Theater of Pain – Quick Guide

What you need to know about the dungeon located in central Maldraxxus: the Theater of Pain. This dungeon can be accessed at level 60.

An Affront of Challengers

First encounter in the dungeon is An Affront of Challengers. This is not simple like the typical dungeon as you need to fight three bosses at the same time. Killing the bosses one at a time is a must because each boss uses an additional ability when they hit 40% HP. It depends on the utility of your group to determine which boss must be killed first. However, if you do not have the specific utility needed, here’s a skill order you can follow- Get Satel to 40%, at 40% he can make himself unkillable for 60 seconds. Next is Pacera, when he gets to 40% he can put a disease on everyone- get rid of the disease if you are able to. Last is Dessia, who is furious at 40% and gets crazy at random players. Dessia’s anger can be removed by killing the other bosses or by Druid’s Soothe or any Soothe alike. You may also use offensive dispels like Purge or Spellsteal on the boss that has Special Transference (looks like a green shield around the boss with a green beam). If not dispelled, that boss can continually heal.

Additional tips:

  • Always avoid the green stuff on the ground
  • Interrupt as many casts as possible
  • Mass dispel and enrage dispelling abilities are best to use in this fight

Gorechop

The boss will hit a hateful strike on the tank which results in a big physical damage. Throughout the encounter, hooks will charge across the room but there will be a small opening which will help you sneak through the hooks. A couple of spawns will appear which does splash damage and leaps to new players. Take them down quickly and do not step on any green pools that form when they die. Focus kills the adds.

Xav the Unfallen

Make sure to quickly kill the banner released by the boss (through a spawn) for it slows everyone, making it harder to dodge abilities like Crushing Slam and Massive Cleave (telegraphed abilities). Occasionally the boss will select two DPS to duel in a pit. The winner of the duel gets a short increase while the losing opponent gets a short damage decrease. During the duel, one player must win within 45 seconds or else both players will get their damage cut in half for 30 seconds.

Kul’tharok

Remember that the tank must always be in melee range of the boss else she’ll cast a DoT for 12 seconds. Group should be slightly spread out to avoid splash damage from Haunt. Dodge the green spirals and avoid green circles on the ground. When the boss starts transmitting the Draw Soul, the targeted player needs to swiftly go behind one of the green circles on the ground which puts the circle between the player and the boss. At the end of the means, your soul will escape your body and run straight to Kul’tharok, getting caught in the green circle. You will be appeased and must collect your soul for you to use abilities again. Recovering your soul gives you a big damage buff for a while.

Mordretha, the Endless Empress

After dealing with the four bosses, go back to the center of the dungeon and click the green smoke to get to the final boss: Mordretha, the Endless Empress. Avoid the big frontal beam which Mordretha will cast. The beam rotates in random directions. She will occasionally put green circles around everyone. Players must spread out just enough so each circle does not hit another player but make sure that circles are close together as possible. This is because an add spawns from each player when the circle expires- interrupt, CC and focus kill all these adds quickly. Randomly, the boss spawns a big green spiral rift at the edge of the room which can drag you towards it if you are too close. Players must stay away from the rift.

Notable mobs

(interrupt and AoE CC will help you)

Rancid Gasbag – dodge the Vile Eruption cast (also known as the burp-fart combo)

Ancient Captain – focus down this mob as it reduces your AoE to nearby enemies by 50%. Interrupt its demoralizing shout cast which reduces all of your damage by 50%

Shackled Soul – careful not to pull too many. They do big damage to random targets and their channel also slows you.

Green Portals – Kill the portal guardian and pick up the swirly green orb it drops when it dies. Take it to one of the orb holders in front of the portal and then locate the next portal.

Bone Magus – CC the Bone Spear cast or dodge the spear that is launched forward.

Nefarious Darkspeaker – interrupt the Necrotic Bolt Valley cast to avoid group damage
